Swift Navigation is currently in a census-designated place in Sumter County, Florida, called The Villages, installing technology to be used for driverless vehicles.

The California-based software company says that in the near future, people in The Villages, a well-known retirement community, will be able to sit in driverless cars, using GPS technology to safely travel.

“Take my wife to work, go back home, maybe pick up the kids at school and drive them home all with a single car,” says Lance Andre with Swift Navigation via News 6/ClickOrlando.com.

Andre is in town installing a GPS antenna on the roof of Village Self Storage, which will eventually be used by Voyage Auto to deploy their driverless vehicles on the streets, he says.

“The self-driving car is the wave of the future, so I think The Villages will be a perfect location,” says Lynn Mattix with Village Self Storage.

According to Swift Navigation, its technology relies on GPS Data, as opposed to using visual indicators on the vehicles.

“At a cloud level, we are down to about an eighth of an inch,” Andre explains. “As we relay that out to the autonomous cars and autonomous vehicles in the market, they will realize about a half inch accuracy out in the field.”

Swift Navigation adds that its GPS antennas will allow driverless vehicles to safely travel on roads without lane stripes, or even pavement.

According to News 6, Sumter County does not have any ordinances preventing the use of driverless vehicles.
