With a mind towards revolutionizing transportation, Lyft has acquired Blue Vision Labs, an Augmented Reality (AR) company that is enabling the next-generation of AR and robotics.

Thanks to the acquisition, Blue Vision Labs will be the first Lyft office in London, and will become part of Lyft’s Level 5 division to build technology for the ride-hailing service’s self-driving efforts.

“We are very excited to be working with Lyft to contribute to their efforts in enabling the future of autonomous mobility,” Blue Vision Labs says in a company blog post.

Launched with the mission of advancing the capabilities of today’s robotics and AR platforms by solving some of the hardest technological challenges in the field, Blue Vision Labs made “great progress” on this goal earlier this year when it released its Blue Vision Labs AR Cloud. The AR Cloud is technology that allows developers to create shared AR experiences that were not possible before at “unprecedented scale,” Blue Vision Labs explains.

Blue Vision Labs says that one potential application of its AR Cloud allows people to connect ridesharing passengers with their drivers by overlaying the car’s position onto the rider’s smartphone screen in augmented reality. The company says that by joining forces with Lyft, it can develop experiences like this at a much greater scale.

The technology that Blue Vision Labs created for its AR cloud is powered using centimeter-accurate 3D maps that cover entire cities, and are built using fleets of vehicles equipped with mobile phones.

“We believe that gaining a detailed understanding of the world is the key requirement for achieving a safe and scalable self-driving platform,” the company says.

Specifically, this technology helps car know where they are, what is around them, and what should they do next at scale not possible with other technologies.
