United Kingdom-based Gem Aero has created the Gem-7 UAS, an unmanned system capable of fulfilling both civil and military, long endurance missions.

According to Capt. Roger J. Ellis of Gem Aero, the company has high expectations for this system.

“We are looking to produce the Ford of the medium UAV market,” Ellis told AUVSI.

Some of the things that can make the Gem-7 the Ford of the UAV market include its ability to operate in a variety of settings and conditions, from a farmer’s field to flying in the rain.

The Gem-7 is also extremely easy to launch, as it takes just 20 minutes to rig from its trailer, with assistance from two people.

The Gem-7, which can carry between 30 and 90 kilograms’ worth of payload depending on flight duration, is also a cheaper alternative than its main competition, Ellis said.

“We aim to beat the Predator on endurance, but come in at about one fortieth the price,” said Ellis. “Yes, that cheap.”

He noted that because of its price, the Gem-7 can be thrown into any danger zone by its commander without a second thought.

“If they lose a few it matters little, there will be plenty more in reserve,” he said. He summed this thought up by referencing a Joseph Stalin quote that says, “quantity has a quality all of its own.”
