Uber Plans to Have Its Michigan-Based Autonomous Vehicle Center Ready by March

In March, Uber is planning to open its new research center dedicated to autonomous vehicle technology in Wixom, Michigan.

The center will largely be staffed by engineers and project program managers, to help integrate the developed technologies into vehicles.

According to Sherif Marakby, vice president of global vehicle programs for Uber, one of the many reasons to place the office in Wixom is because the area is a hotbed for automotive talent.

“Many of our engineers were coming to Detroit on day trips and visiting and working with companies,” Marakby says via The Detroit News. “A lot of the talent actually comes from Detroit. So it just felt like the right thing to do to actually have a place for people to work from.”

To integrate developed technology into autonomous vehicles, Uber plans to work with Tier 1 auto suppliers that are developing the hardware for these vehicles, as well as automotive manufacturers.

For Uber, this latest development is a continuation of its work in the world of autonomous vehicles. Last September, the ride hailing company launched its driverless vehicle testing program in Pittsburgh.
