The University of Missouri School of Journalism’s policy committee has set its first standards for faculty, students and staff who want to fly drones for school news organizations or classes.

The school says the procedures are intended to make sure the school, considered the world’s oldest journalism school, is able to take full advantage of the Federal Aviation Administration’s Part 107 small UAS rule, which allows the use of unmanned aircraft for commercial purposes.

The guidelines, put in place on Dec. 14, 2016, call for direct supervision from a pilot holding an FAA Remote Pilot Airman, six hours or more of flight training, and a completed FAA Part 107 knowledge test study guide that has been approved.

Richard Shaw, of the Missouri Drone Journalism program says, “The goal is to promote a culture of constructive altitude and pattern of behavior that demonstrates a commitment to safety.”
