Three hundred Intel Shooting Star drones were prerecorded and used for the halftime show at Super Bowl 51 on Sunday, Feb. 5. Thanks to special LED lights that allow for the creation of more than four billion color combinations, the UAS were choreographed to create an image of the American flag in the background while Lady Gaga performed.

“Lady Gaga and the Super Bowl creative team wanted to pull off something that had never been done before and we were able to combine Intel drone innovation with her artistry to pull off a truly unique experience,” says Josh Walden, senior vice president and general manager, New Technology Group at Intel.

Through a press release, Walden continues, “the potential for these light show drones is endless and we hope this experience inspires other creatives, artists and innovators to really think about how they can incorporate drone technology in new ways that have yet to even be thought of.”

At the end of the halftime show, Intel ran a 10-second spot where the Shooting Star UAS morphed from the Pepsi logo into the Intel logo.

While it was the first time that UAS have been featured during a Super Bowl and televised event, it wasn’t the first time that Intel has showcased its drone technology. The Shooting Star UAS, which weigh just eight ounces, was recently used for light shows during the holidays at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.
