AUVSI’s Hill Week 2021: Advancing the Unmanned Systems Industry’s Future

The core of AUVSI’s mission is to build, grow and foster a viable and sustainable unmanned and autonomous systems industry. Critical to achieving that goal is establishing balanced and appropriate policies that support the development and expanded operation of unmanned systems.

Since the last time AUVSI and members were able to convene for Hill Day in September 2019, the unmanned systems community has made unprecedented, even transformative, progress. A worldwide audience witnessed how rapidly unmanned systems could be developed and deployed to deliver critical capabilities where they are needed most.

Even more progress is expected in the months and year ahead – including recommendations to enable beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) drone operations, automated vehicle testing expanding to new regions, and the U.S. Navy executing on its vision for a future force powered by autonomy.

These opportunities will unlock new jobs and services that benefit Americans – but to take advantage of this momentum, it is critical that existing regulations are updated and that Congress funds key programs.

This week, AUVSI is hosting meetings to enable members of our Advocacy Committees to meet with Members of Congress and their staffs – across parties and chambers – to address these important issues.

Leaders from highly-engaged member companies are gathering with changemakers on Capitol Hill to discuss the current policy landscape in air, maritime, and ground domains and to share priorities for legislative actions that will support the unmanned systems industry. They are also educating lawmakers about the value of these systems, including sharing studies demonstrating how drone delivery and autonomous trucks can expand access to consumers in underserved areas, improve workforce conditions, and reduce carbon emissions.

Maritime members are also reiterating concerns sent in a Hill letter last month that urged the House and Senate Armed Services Committees to increase funding for key unmanned maritime systems initiatives within the U.S. Navy.

Throughout the week, members in all domains have the opportunity to:

  • Make a difference on issues impacting the future of the unmanned systems and robotics community,
  • Help strengthen relationships between AUVSI, our members, and legislators, and
  • Gain a deeper perspective on how federal policies are being shaped on Capitol Hill.
