Falmouth Scientific, Inc. (FSI) and RigStat have announced that they have successfully installed Ocean Current Monitoring Systems, with Aids to Navigation (AtoN) transceivers over Automatic Identification System (AIS) communications, to two piers at the Puerta Maya Cruise Terminal in Cozumel, Mexico.

The AIS is a system that provides vessel location and information reporting, while the AtoN transceivers are a subclass of the AIS. The AtoN transceivers are responsible for conveying important navigation information to mariners and authorities, including marine hazards and meteorological data.

The Ocean Current Monitoring Systems combine FSI’s ACM-PLUS current meters with RigStat environmental monitoring systems, to provide and send real time information such as current speed, current direction, and data on water protection, to incoming cruise vessels to ensure a safe approach to the terminal. The captain of an incoming ship can view all of this information thanks to the standard AIS data stream.

The General Manager of the Puerta Maya Terminal says, “these monitoring systems will not only assist captains in navigating into our port, but will also increase the safety for the many thousands of cruise ship passengers that visit our resort city each year.”
