The replacement of metal and thermoset composites with next-generation thermoplastic composite solutions has the potential to reduce cost though lower cycle time and net shape moulding. A recently developed low melt polyaryletherketone LMPAEK polymer-based hybrid composite system enables a part to combine the mechanics of continuous fibre materials, the flexibility of injection moulded design and the short cycle time of thermoplastic processing. In addition, net shape parts can be created in the final injection moulding step, meaning costly machining steps can be avoided.
