Involi, AirMap developing pre-integrated UTM and Air Traffic Awareness platform

Involi, a provider of air traffic data for UAS, is partnering with AirMap to develop a pre-integrated UTM and Air Traffic Awareness platform for safe, efficient, and scalable UAS operations. By combining its low-altitude air traffic data service with AirMap’s drone traffic management platform, Involi says that the companies can facilitate safe, complex, and autonomous UAS applications such as drone delivery, large-scale agriculture support, surveying and mapping. “It was a natural progression for Involi and AirMap to formalize their ongoing technical integration,” says Involi CEO and co-founder Manu Lubrano.

H-E-B, Udelv launching pilot program to test deliveries via autonomous vehicle

In partnership with Udelv, San Antonio-based supermarket company H-E-B has announced plans to launch a pilot program later this year to test a delivery service that uses an autonomous vehicle. H-E-B will use an autonomous van from Udelv to serve customers near its Olmos Park H-E-B, which is just north of downtown San Antonio. “At H-E-B, we continue to evaluate and utilize innovative technologies in all parts of our business,” says Paul Tepfenhart, senior vice president of Omnichannel and Emerging Technologies at Central Market and H-E-B.

Northland Community & Technical College awarded grant to form National Center for Autonomous Technologies

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded Northland Community & Technical College and five partner agencies a $7 million grant to form the National Center for Autonomous Technologies (NCAT), which will be hosted on Northland’s Aerospace site in Thief River Falls, Minnesota. The NCAT will join the NSF’s large circle of Advanced Technological Education Centers (ATE). “We will build upon the work of several other NSF ATE program investments, including Northland’s DRONETECH programs, MATE, CAAT, and GeoTech,” says Jon Beck, Northland Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) instructor & NCAT principal investigator.

Connected Robotics developing robots to free restaurant staff to handle 'more humanistic' side of work

A company called Connected Robotics (CR) that develops specialized robot systems for cooking in restaurant kitchens has announced that it has raised $7.8 million during a Series A investment round. According to CR, the company combines “robot control know-how” collected from robot product development experience in manufacturing along with sensing and learning technology using deep learning, which helps make the robots in the kitchen intelligent. CR says that it wants to develop robot systems that handle the heavy lifting in the kitchen, so that restaurant staff can focus on the “more humanistic” side of work to provide a positive environment for those serving and customers alike. 

Tomahawk Robotics, FLYMOTION partner to bring robotic control technology to public safety and government market

In an effort to bring its Kinesis software suite to the public safety and government market, Tomahawk Robotics, a developer of robotic control technologies, has announced a partnership with FLYMOTION, which provides end to end UAS platforms and services. According to Tomahawk Robotics, Kinesis allows robotic systems to be managed no matter their underlying hardware. Whether in the air, on the ground or in the water, users can control their robotic systems in the same way, port autonomy capabilities from one platform to another, and leverage information across these systems, using Kinesis. 

Cobalt Robotics combines autonomous patrol robots with human specialists to keep places safe

Cobalt Robotics, a developer of indoor autonomous robots, has announced that it has raised $35 million in Series B financing, which is expected to help the company expand its services throughout the domestic United States. Combining autonomous patrolling robots with human specialists, Cobalt’s Robots-as-a-Service model allows organizations to provide a 24-hour security strategy that complements current security assets such as manned security guards and access control systems (ACS). According to Cobalt, this comprehensive strategy results in a “highly effective” security program that not only reduces costs, but also features robots that remain up-to-date with the “latest and greatest software.”

CerbAir, AirMap partner to enhance low-altitude airspace safety

European counter-UAS manufacturer CerbAir has announced plans to work with AirMap to provide “integrated, comprehensive solutions” for low-altitude airspace safety and security. CerbAir and AirMap say that through their partnership, they will respond to the “urgent need” to combine efficient UAS traffic management with reliable protection from rogue or accidental UAS intrusions.

BlackBerry, LG partner to advance connected and autonomous vehicle technology

In an effort to “accelerate the deployment of connected and autonomous vehicle technology” for automotive OEMs and suppliers around the world, BlackBerry Limited is expanding its partnership with LG Electronics Inc. Through the agreement, LG Electronics will build next generation digital consolidated cockpits— including infotainment systems, digital instrument clusters, and telematics systems for several OEMs—using a variety of BlackBerry QNX software and services.

Waymo making its self-driving minivans available for Lyft customers in Arizona

According to CNBC, Waymo is now making some of its self-driving minivans available for Lyft customers. The rides will be offered in a small area just outside of Phoenix, where Waymo has been testing its technology. Waymo has even launched its own autonomous ride-share service called Waymo One in the area. 

Carnegie Mellon University, Argo AI establish center for autonomous vehicle research

Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and Argo AI have announced a five-year, $15 million sponsored research partnership that will result in Argo AI funding research into advanced perception and next-generation decision-making algorithms for autonomous vehicles. CMU and Argo AI will establish the Carnegie Mellon University Argo AI Center for autonomous vehicle research. Through advanced research projects, the center will seek to help overcome the hurdles associated with enabling self-driving vehicles to operate in various real-world conditions. “We are thrilled to deepen our partnership with Argo AI to shape the future of self-driving technologies,” says CMU President Farnam Jahanian.
