15 teams awarded $41 million to improve transportation access to persons with disabilities and individuals with mobility challenges

Through two Department of Transportation design challenges that are meant to improve transportation access to persons with disabilities and individuals with mobility challenges, 15 teams in 15 states will be awarded more than $41 million, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine L. Chao announced on Wednesday, Jan. 6.  “These exciting projects support the development of new innovative, inclusive, and affordable transportation technologies that address mobility and access challenges,” Secretary Chao said.

AUVSI Welcomes Remote ID and Operations Over People Final Rules for UAS

Today, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has delivered a Final Rule on Remote Identification (ID) for unmanned aerial systems (UAS). Thought of as a digital license plate for drones, the objective of Remote ID is to ensure that a UAS in flight is providing identification and location information that authorities can access. The FAA also released the final rule for Operations Over People, which includes rules for operations at night.  

Department of Transportation announces funding for automated driving projects

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine L. Chao recently announced that eight projects in seven states will receive nearly $60 million in federal grant funding to test the safe integration of automated driving systems (ADS) onto U.S. roadways.

Entities join forces to create statewide UAS Working Group in North Carolina

In partnership with N.C. Emergency Management, the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s (NCDOT) Division of Aviation UAS Program Office is working with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to create a statewide UAS Working Group that includes local, state and federal governments, and the private sector. According to NCDOT, the goal of the UAS Working Group is to “establish a partnership where government and private sector partners can forge strong relationships by sharing best practices and training for disasters and other emergencies.”

DOT Secretary Chao announces UAS IPP selectees

Ten state, tribal or local governments have been tapped to help expand the flight envelope of unmanned aircraft in the National Airspace System, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced Wednesday.   The selections for the UAS Integration Pilot Program are Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma; the city of San Diego; Virginia Tech – the Center for Innovative Technology; the Kansas Department of Transportation; the Lee County Mosquito Control District of Ft. Myers, Florida; the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority of Tennessee; the North Carolina Department of Transportation; the North Dakota Department of Transportation; the city of Reno, Nevada; and the University of Alaska-Fairbanks.

Driverless shuttle bus in Minneapolis welcomes passengers during Super Bowl festivities

On Friday, Jan. 26, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) offered free shuttle rides in a driverless shuttle bus traveling a one-block section of the Nicolet Mall, which is located in downtown Minneapolis. The rides were scheduled to continue, subject to weather conditions, on Jan. 27 and 28. The rides were offered as part of the Super Bowl festivities taking place leading up to the game on Feb. 4 in Minneapolis. Approximately 80 people showed up to test out the vehicle on Jan. 26, and according to the Star Tribune, the vehicle received positive reviews. Shirley Moises called it “the wave of the future,” while Kyle Delahunt said the ride was “enjoyable.”

'DriveOhio' launches, will focus on autonomous and connected vehicle initiatives in Ohio

On Jan. 18, Ohio Governor John Kasich made DriveOhio official with an executive order. DriveOhio is essentially a “one-stop shop for researchers, developers and manufacturers to collaborate on autonomous and connected vehicle initiatives in Ohio.” The executive order brings together two entities; those that are responsible for building transportation infrastructure, and those that are developing advanced mobility technologies. It provides a “statewide, single point of entry” for companies and innovators to test and build smart mobility technologies together, and, it establishes an “infrastructure for developing and establishing statewide standards and strategic recommendations” in regard to the types and use of technology for deployment, as well as their financing.

Groundbreaking ceremony launches construction of SunTrax test facility

A groundbreaking ceremony officially launched the construction of SunTrax test facility, which is a long-term partnership between the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise and Florida Polytechnic University (Florida Poly) that is centrally located between Tampa and Orlando. SunTrax includes a 2.25 mile oval track on a 400-acre site in the city of Auburndale, Florida that will be used for, among many things, testing connected and automated technology such as lane departure, and vehicle platooning. The oval track’s construction is scheduled to be complete in spring 2019. In addition to the oval track, SunTrax will also feature an infield facility, which is being designed as a hub for connected and automated vehicle testing.
