Drone racing has made its way to South Africa, with the creation of the continent’s first fully funded drone racing league, called Drone Racing Africa (DRA).

With the establishment of this league, everyone from junior school children to adults will be eligible to learn the ins and outs of controlling UAS while learning how to race them competitively.

While the goal of the league is to have competitive racing of UAS, and hopefully send some of the county’s most competitive pilots to major competitions across the world, there is also an emphasis on teaching a future generation how to properly operate UAS for everyday application.

“At DRA, we understand the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) development for children and the theoretical component will be designed with these needs in mind, so that children are educated on both flight theory relevance along with an important application to multiple uses within the wider drone industry as well as the safety and the law that applies to flying drones,” explained Drone Racing Africa CEO Simon Robinson, via IT News Africa.

In regards to the sport itself, Robinson added, “the massive growth potential for this sport in Africa impacts numerous industries including education, technology, FMCG and communications. For individuals, there are undeniable career prospects so it’s an incredibly appealing sport.”

This month, the country will begin hosting two-day programs to introduce people to the sport of drone racing.
