QinetiQ North America (QNA) and Persistent Systems have announced a partnership that will see Persistent integrate its mobile ad hoc network (MANET) radios into QNA’s family of unmanned ground vehicles, which includes the Talon and Dragon Runner ground robots.

The MANET technology will allow QNA’s ground robots to connect with a MANET communications system that is not only reliable and long range, but also self-forming, self-healing and scalable.

“Persistent's MANET relay radio products can significantly increase the communication range enabling the robot operator to perform dangerous missions at much greater distances,” says QinetiQ North America president Jeff Yorsz, through a company press release.

“At the end of the day, everything we do is about keeping our soldiers safe.”

QNA’s UGVs will also be equipped with Wave Ray technology. Wave Ray technology will give the UGVs a variety of upgrades, including increased operational range and throughput in several environments, multiple real-time HD video feeds that are transmitted back to the operator from all UGVs within the MANET, and increased situational awareness and operational effectiveness when a tactical team is wearing MPU5 radio systems, which allows them to receive real time video and sensor data from the UGVs.

Persistent Systems CEO Dr. Herbert Rubens says, “the Wave Relay MANET also lays the groundwork for autonomous and collaborative behaviors that will dominate the battlefield of the future.”
