NVIDIA, best known for computer graphics, has moved into the realm of autonomous machines with its Jetson computing platform.

“We also invest in technology for autonomous machines, so we do a lot of work in self-driving cars, we also work in robots and drones, and those are some of the things we are showing off today,” says Jesse Clayton, product manager for autonomous machines at NVIDIA (Booth #1231), which is exhibiting at Xponential for the first time.

The newest Jetson platform, the TX1, is a module built specifically for autonomous machines. Partner companies have built systems around it to take advantage of its capabilities for computer vision and deep learning, which can be used to allow robots to avoid obstacles and identify objects. For instance, it could allow self-driving cars to read road signs and drones to inspect bridges and identify trouble spots automatically.

“It’s smaller than a credit card, so a really great product for putting into drones that can’t lift that much, that are power constrained, flight time constrained and for mobile robots,” Clayton says.
