Ford moving autonomous and electric vehicle teams to Detroit

Ford Motor Company has announced plans to move its key autonomous vehicle and electric vehicle business and strategy teams to a historic building known as The Factory, in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood. Expected to be up and running in early 2018, The Factory will serve as a place for the teams to work on urban mobility challenges and solutions. More than 220 employees will work at The Factory. “We’re excited to choose this inspirational location in one of Detroit’s resurgent neighborhoods to accelerate our work on electric and autonomous vehicles,” says Jim Hackett, Ford president and CEO.

Drone Delivery Canada's cargo delivery UAS now compliant with Transport Canada UAS standard

Drone Delivery Canada (DDC) has announced that Transport Canada has accepted its Declaration of Compliance for the X1000 Sparrow cargo delivery UAS, which makes the UAS compliant with the Transport Canada UAS standard. The Sparrow UAS, which has demonstrated a “history of safe operation in some of the harshest environmental conditions in Canada’s north” during recent research and development flights according to DDC, is the first cargo delivery UAS of its kind to be accepted under the Transport Canada, Compliant UAS program.

UAS tech company Vigilant Aerospace receives investment from The Flying Object

Vigilant Aerospace, which has a product called FlightHorizon for UAS pilots, autopilots and airspace managers, has announced a new investment from The Flying Object (TFO), which is a global venture fund focused on the commercial UAS industry. ​Managed by the global investment firm Kluz Ventures, TFO invests in UAS technology and service companies that are leading the industry.

Leptron UAS to manufacture Black Swift S1 UAS as a result of strategic alliance

Black Swift Technologies (BST) and Leptron Unmanned Aircraft Systems have formed a strategic alliance that will result in Leptron UAS manufacturing the Black Swift S1 UAS integrated with BST’s SwiftCore Flight Management System. Leptron and Geotech Environmental Equipment, Inc.—which Leptron is a subsidiary of—will market the resulting aircraft as the GeoSwift Mapper.

LiDAR sensor developer Ouster announces $27 million series A fundraise

A company called Ouster that is developing LiDAR sensors for autonomous vehicles has announced a $27 million series A fundraise led by Cox Enterprises. Ouster would like to provide an affordable alternative to more expensive LiDAR sensors, so the company has developed its first product, a 64-channel LiDAR sensor called OS1, which will be priced at $12,000. Ouster says that besides being a more affordable option in comparison to its competition, OS1 is also “dramatically lighter, smaller, and uses less power than other competitors.”

Cyient to host India's first UAV hackathon

A company called Cyient, which provides engineering, manufacturing, geospatial, network, and operations management services to global industry leaders, has announced that it will host India’s first UAV hackathon, Hackadrone 2018. Hackadrone 2018, which is being organized by Cyient and DJI, in sponsorship with Microsoft and the Government of Telangana, is open to tech students, independent software programmers, developers and start-ups who are interested in developing innovative commercial and industrial technologies using the latest UAV technology.

Nissan and DeNA unveil mobility service featuring autonomous driving technology

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. and DeNA Co., Ltd. have unveiled their Easy Ride mobility service that will utilize autonomous driving technology. Easy Ride’s concept is “more freedom of mobility,” and it is “envisioned as a service for anyone who wants to travel freely to their destination of choice in a robo-vehicle.” For Easy Ride customers, the goal is for them to be able to complete the entire process— from setting destinations and summoning vehicles to paying the fare—through a dedicated mobile app. Customers will also be able to select recommended local destinations and sightseeing routes depending on their objectives.
