Boeing has just made a significant addition to its impressive repertoire of unmanned systems, with the announcement that it has acquired Liquid Robotics, the company known for its Wave Glider unmanned surface vehicle (USV).

“With Liquid Robotics’ innovative technology and Boeing’s leading intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance solutions, we are helping our customers address maritime challenges in ways that make existing platforms smarter, missions safer and operations more efficient,” said Leanne Caret, president and CEO of Boeing Defense, Space & Security, in a press release.

The Wave Glider is powered by wave and solar energy, and collects data while performing missions such as anti-submarine warfare, environmental assessments and surface vehicle detection. Since its creation, the system has traveled more than one million nautical miles.

“I am proud of our team, culture, and relentless commitment to designing the best ocean surface robot in the maritime industry,” said Gary Gysin, president and CEO of Liquid Robotics.

“This acquisition allows us to leverage the strengths of one of the world’s leading global companies while continuing to push our innovation to new levels.”

Although Boeing just purchased Liquid Robotics, the two companies have been working together since 2014, when Boeing integrated its advanced sensors onto the Sensor Hosting Autonomous Remote Craft (SHARC) version of the Wave Glider.
