BMW, Mobileye and HERE have announced a partnership that will allow Mobileye to equip BMW’s 2018 models with its Road Experience Management (REM) data generation technology.

Using camera-based advanced driver assist system (ADAS) technology on the vehicles, real-time data will be crowd sourced, allowing Mobileye to support and make autonomous driving safer, through next-generation HD maps.

With industry collaboration in mind to promote the safest and most effective autonomous driving functionalities, data collected from BMW vehicles can be merged with data from other automakers, to use within Mobileye’s Global RoadBook (GLRB), which is designed to update HD maps with accurate localization capabilities.

“Global RoadBook is an initiative to utilize data from these cameras to create the high-definition maps required to make the next generation of autonomous driving a reality, in an inclusive way which will create an industry standard,” says Mobileye’s Chairman and Chief Technology Officer, Professor Amnon Shashua, via press release.

Mobileye EyeQ processors and software will use cameras acting as intelligent agents to enable the collection of anonymized, fleet-wide data that can be used for adding a dynamic layer to current and future navigation maps, giving BMW drivers the ability to have access to pertinent information including traffic density, potential road hazards and on-street parking.

BMW and Mobileye will transfer anonymized data to HERE, so that HERE can support the quick creation and updating of HD mapping. HERE will use this data to make real time updates of its HD Live Map, its real-time cloud service for vehicles with different levels of autonomy, and to enhance its Open Location Platform, to give vehicles real world depictions of the world as changes occur.

Klaus Fröhlich, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Development, says, “at a strategic level, this announcement makes it clear how our cooperation with Mobileye leverages our investment stake in HERE. The data of future BMW vehicles will enrich the quality of maps and services for everyone.”

“Furthermore, this represents a significant step towards introducing the BMW iNEXT with its features of highly automated driving in 2021 as well as creating a leading ecosystem around HERE's Open Location Platform leveraged by swarm data from millions of vehicles across the world.”
