BNSF Railway will soon begin testing what it believes will be the complete suite of hardware it will use for its UAS beyond-line-of-sight Pathfinder program.

Todd Graetz, head of the UAS program for the railway, said that testing will begin “by the end of the second quarter of this year, and BLOS flights will be underway in the third quarter.”

BNSF envisions using a mix of UAS and sensors, including a custom-built 29-megapixel camera that provides images with metadata so the company can identify problems with its tracks, which cover 32,500 miles in 28 states and two Canadian provinces.
